Dear Parents/Carers,

A Happy New Year to you all. I hope your Christmas was happy and restful.

At the beginning of this Spring Term, there is already news for your information, and of course the
usual diary of events as we know them so far. I hope that this will help you to plan in advance, your
involvement with school activities.

As you know Miss Wright has now left us to prepare for the birth of her baby and we are pleased to
welcome back, Mr Butterfield who will be sharing 3W with Mrs Whittingham.

We are looking forward to the gradual return of Mrs Raspin during this term but meanwhile 5R will be led
by Mrs Horsewood and Mrs Hussain.

Christmas Celebrations – We must thank you for your support and enthusiasm for our Christmas
events last term. The raffle raised a fantastic £604.91 for School Funds and the concert collections
totalled £367.58 which has been donated to support the work of ‘ The Forge’ in Scunthorpe.

We collected 81 shoe boxes for our Samaritan’s Purse contribution.

Parents Evenings – 11th/12th January – Letter to book appointment to accompany this newsletter.
Please note that Y6 will have a further Parents Evening on Tuesday / Thursday 20th /22nd March prior
to their SATs tests, while the rest of the school will have their meeting on 1st / 2nd May in the Summer
Term.

Chinese New Year: During this term we will be celebrating this on Tuesday 24th January. As the
colour Red is traditionally worn on this day, children are invited to ‘wear red’ instead of normal uniform,
but of course this is not compulsory. Please note that make up, face paint or coloured hair spray is not
allowed. Our normal timetable will be put aside and children will work with their house team on a variety
of activities.

Recorder Groups:

I would very much like to ensure that the recorder groups can continue next year from September,
and would ask if there is any parent who would be interested in volunteering to run these. I would be
very willing to train one or more people during the coming two terms, either in playing the recorder and
in running the groups. More than one volunteer would be a bonus! Please contact school if you can
help with this. The children concerned are really keen to continue to learn and they get a lot out of the
performances and competitions we enter.

Finally I make the usual commitment of the school to seeing parents at any time. We will do this,
although for class teachers, the start of the day is not an easy time for prolonged meetings. If, on rare

occasions, we cannot be available, then an appointment will be made for you at the earliest mutually
convenient time.

Yours sincerely,

Gillian Vernau
Headteacher

Dear Parents/carers,

There are one or two items I would like to bring to your attention with another newsletter.

Wednesday 30th November – Potential Strike Action: As you will be aware from the media, the combined teacher and school leadership trade unions will possibly be taking industrial action on Wednesday 30th November. The action (a one day strike) will result in class or whole school closures across the country.

The decision to close the school or send pupils home is never taken lightly, but in this instance, where staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, I will have no choice but to take appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and well being of all pupils.

We are aware that class/school closures inconvenience parents and carers and so I am writing to give you advance notice of the likely impact of the action on this school. If the action goes ahead, the school will be closed to pupils.

Of course if the situation is resolved prior to 30th November we will be delighted to inform you that no action is to be taken and school will be open as normal. Either way we will keep you informed.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Parents Evenings: One or two parents have commented that our January Parents Evenings are rather late in the school year and I have to say that we agree with them. Like you, we feel that it would have been useful to have a consultation with parents at this point in the year.

We will continue as planned this year but will arrange for Parents Evening next year to be mid November which will hopefully avoid the worst of the weather whilst giving children the chance to settle down in their new classes.

I’m sorry we got it wrong this year!

Parent Questionnaire: Thank you to all parents who have returned the questionnaire. We will inform you of the outcomes when we have counted up. Please return them by Friday 25th November as figures will be finalised then.

School Christmas Party: As usual we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £1.00 for each pupil, towards the cost of the food, prizes and a small gift at the Christmas party. A slip is attached to this letter for you to return.

Reminder of dates for the remainder of term:

Tues Nov 22nd 6.00p.m.

Y6 Meeting re. Stay Away Trip to Sherringham

Sunday 4th Dec

School Choir to Salvation Army Carol Service

Wed 7th Dec

Christmas Dinner

Tues 13th and Thurs 15th 1.30p.m.

Lower School Concert

Wed / Thur 14th/15th 6.30p.m.

Upper School Concert at Church at Parish Church (Further letter to follow)

Friday 16th Dec

Lower School Christmas Party

Monday 19th Dec

Upper School Christmas Party

School closes at 2.30p.m. on Tuesday 20th December and reopens on Wednesday 4th January 2012

Finally may I assure you that you are always welcome in school and if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to come in immediately. You may not be able to see the teachers at short notice but there will always be someone who will be able to help or at least make an appointment for you at a mutually convenient time.

Dear Parents/carers,

I hope you enjoyed a good Half Term break. We now return for the busiest time of the school year.

An updated diary of events is attached for your convenience.

I must thank those of you who supported our many events last Half Term. Our Harvest collection was abundant and all of the children have enjoyed the cinema and theatre group visits as well as their own year group outings.

We made £72.80 for school fund from the Firefighter’s Charity with our collection of recycled materials. Thank you for your donations. We also raised £230 for Ruhanga School in Uganda on our Non Uniform Day. Some of our children organised a cake sale as an additional money raiser for this, and again thank you to those parents who put in the work at home to support their children’s efforts.

Voluntary Parental Contributions for Trips and visiting education experiences: We are aware that sometimes school asks quite a lot of you financially, in order to allow our children to have a rich experience of visits and educational experiences. I’m afraid that this term several families have chosen not to support these events with a contribution and school has had to fund a shortfall in excess of £400 over the Half Term.

I do hope that parents understand that school’s are not allowed to put an additional price on any activity to cover the expense of pupils who have no contribution made for them. Any shortfall has to come out of school fund. In fact for most activities and visits, this fund already is used to subsidise visits and the suggested contribution is often lower than the actual cost.

I am mentioning this now, because if the present rate of school fund subsidy continues, then school will no longer be able to arrange theatre groups, cinema visits or some school trips and in fact we have already decided to cancel the Pantomime theatre visit later this term.

Of course if there is real hardship and difficulty in paying for an event, we are happy to help and no child will ever be barred from an activity because of financial hardship. We would ask that in this event, parents speak with the Headteacher so that we can consider the alternatives.

Charity Collections: As we held a Non Uniform Day at the end of last Half Term in aid of our Ugandan School. We have decided that it would be unreasonable to ask for more money for the Child in Need event later this month, so we have decided that we will donate the entry money for the school disco on Friday 4th November, to this national charitable event.

We look forward to receiving the Xmas Shoeboxes for Samaritans Purse, which must be in school by Wednesday 23rd November.

Christmas Dinner – Wednesday 7th December: As the festive season approaches we are organising our school Christmas dinner which will be available for the children.

As the catering staff need to place an early order for the food we would ask you to complete the proforma at the end of this letter if your child will require a dinner on that day. All slips must be returned to the school office by Friday 19th November.

Money will be paid at the till as usual but we would point out that no lunch loans will be given out on the day. The price of the meal will be £2.00.

Please note that children bringing a packed lunch will be included in the festive atmosphere in the dining hall.

Parents Evenings: You will have noticed that there is no end of term parents evening this term. Last year we were snowed off and had postpone until January and everyone felt that this was a better arrangement, reducing the pressure of work during the busy Christmas celebrations. We are therefore having parents evenings on 10th and 11th January 2012.

There is one exception to this arrangement. Miss Wright will be holding her Parents Consultations on the afternoons of Wednesday 30th November and Thursday 1st December. Further details regarding booking appointments for this will be sent shortly.

Finally may I assure you that you are always welcome in school and if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to come in immediately. You may not be able to see the teachers at short notice but there will always be someone who will be able to help or at least make an appointment for you at a mutually convenient time.

Thursday 8th September 2011

Dear Parents/carers,

Welcome to the Autumn Term 2011 and a special welcome to our new Y3 parents, and a few with children in other year groups who have joined us. On the staff side, we welcome Mr Butterfield, who will be working in Year 5 for a while during the absence of Miss Taylor due to ill health.

We are already well settled and the calendar of events and activities for the term looks both exciting and full. Attached to this letter is a diary for the term which I hope you will find useful in planning your involvement with school events. There will of course be additions to this as the term progresses and more information will be sent as the need arises.

May I take the opportunity to thank all of you who donated school uniform for the school we are trying to support in Uganda. We have a substantial load to pass on. Also our non uniform day later in the term will hopefully raise some funds for the work in this school.

Year Group Meetings: These are Meetings where you can meet with your child’s new teacher and learn about any particular events affecting that year group. You will be introduced to the topics being covered during the year, proposed visits etc. Also there will be a chance for you to see the Sex Education video which will be shown to the children at some point in the year. The purpose of the meeting is to help you be more involved and aware of what your child is doing in school, to receive information and to ask any questions you might have.

The Year 6 Meeting will also have information regarding the 2012 SATs testing which is due to take place during the week beginning Monday May 14th. Please avoid any absences during this week, and no holidays can be authorised at this time.

Holidays in School Time: Please be aware that the Headteacher can only authorise holidays in school time if there are exceptional circumstances which prevent the holiday being taken during school breaks. If your employer insists that your holidays must be taken at a fixed time, this must be supported by a letter from them stating the reason why holiday dates are not negotiable.

Photographs: The school photographer will visit Friday 16th September. As in previous years individual and family photographs will be taken. However, over the last few years the number of parents preferring to have just one photograph has increased. In order to help our organisation of this event would you please indicate on the slip below and return it to school if you wish your child to be collected from the infant school for a family photograph. Only those pupils returning slips will be able to have a family group photograph with siblings from the infant school.

Parent Helpers in School: We have established a small but valuable and effective, group of parents who helped in school. I am keen to establish a situation where parents can support the school in very practical ways. It is not always easy, I know, for parents to give up time during the school day on a regular basis to come in to help but there are often times when we need help on a specific day or to do some particular task.

If you are interested in getting involved in helping in school, please do let us know. Please do note that anyone working in school must have CRB clearance but this can be obtained at no cost to either yourselves or school.

Theatre Visit / Film Week: We have this term two important events to enhance our pupils experience of learning. Firehorse Theatre Group will be in school in October with a production entitled ‘ Bully’s Paradise’, and we will be taking all pupils to the cinema during Film Week. We will be asking for a voluntary contribution towards the cost of these items, but they are also being supported by School Fund monies to keep down the cost for our families.

Clubs and out of School Hours Activities: Already staff are planning for the clubs which they can run during the course of the year. Art Club, Eco Club, Football and Cross Country, Choir, Recorders, will be regular weekly activities but from time to time other activities will be offered for short term periods. More information on these will be coming to you.

Harvest Festival : In school we have a special assembly for our pupils when we celebrate Harvest and the good things we all enjoy. We always collect produce and make a donation to ‘The Forge’ who rely on such donations to continue their valuable work of supporting families in need. Please do send some foodstuffs if you can. Cans and unperishables are the most appreciated as they can be stored easily. Contributions can be sent from Wednesday 28th September, but fresh produce on the day ( Tuesday 4th October) please.

Data Collection: At this time of the year we update the information we have on our computer and we will be sending out to you a copy of this so that you can let us know of any changes that need to be made. It is particularly phone numbers which tend to change and as you know our texting service depends on us having correct information.

Please would you return the form as soon as possible with any amendments made. If the information is correct would you still please return the form with the comment ‘ no changes needed’ written on the top. This will help us enormously and thank you in advance for your co-operation.

Finally may I assure you that you are always welcome in school and if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to come in immediately. You may not be able to see the teachers at short notice but there will always be someone who will be able to help or at least make an appointment for you at a mutually convenient time.

Yours sincerely,

Gillian Vernau

Dear Parents/Carers, As we come to the end of our term and our school year, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for you continuous support both for the school and for your children. We have had some fantastic events to celebrate during the year. I hope you have enjoyed the end of term events. Sports Day and the Concerts were a grand way of bringing to everyone’s attention some of the achievements of our children over the year. There are one or two final items of information that I hope you will find useful. Lost Property: This week on Thursday 21st July we will be clearing out our lost property box. During the day the children will be given the chance to claim anything they recognise as theirs, and after school we will be displaying the contents of the box for your perusal. If you wish to come to the school hall to see if there is anything your child has lost, you will be most welcome. We will then be disposing of anything left, either to uniform for Ruganga collection, Charity recycling, or the bin! Dinner Money: This is to be increased to £2.00 per meal from September. Collection of Uniform for Ruganga School, Uganda: We are still hoping to collect some uniform to send to this school. Any uniform no longer needed can be dropped off on weekdays, at the school front door during the first four weeks of the school holiday. This will be an opportunity for our Y6 pupils to donate uniform which is of no further use to them. Please only leave bags when the school gates are open enabling you to drop the bags at the front door. We really don’t want bags left by the school gates as this will cause nuisance to our neighbours. Merit Awards: We have found that a great number of our children are achieving the Platinum Award of 20 Merits this week, due to the end of term awards usually made and awards for taking part in key events. Sadly, we are unable to invite parents to see these certificates awarded on the last day of term. I hope that you will, nevertheless, reinforce our message to the children who get these certificates on Friday that they have done extremely well to achieve such a high number of merits, and be proud of them. Y6 Pupils: We of course have to say goodbye to our Year 6 pupils this week and it is always a sad part of the end of the summer term. They have been a great year 6 and we wish them every success in this important new stage in their lives. We look forward to hearing great things about their future achievements. School Dates 2011/12:

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you all enjoyed the Half Term break. Considering how short the first part of this term was, it was very busy and we were well ready for the break.

Following completion of their SATs, our Y6 have now enjoyed their stay away visit to Sheringham. It went very well and all who took part enjoyed the activities and the fresh air. We are all very grateful to the staff who gave up some of their own holiday time to give this experience to our pupils.

The Scunthorpe Festival was a success for the children who took part and I am really grateful to those parents who offer not only practical support, with transport, but also give on going encouragement to their children to practice and take part.

Now we start the last few weeks of the school year and you will see from the updated Diary of Events that they will be busy. We hope that you will be able to join us for some of these events.

Recycle fabric / clothing for the Firefighters Charity / Collection of Uniform for Ruganga School, Uganda: Reminder of the collection on Friday 10th June 9.30a.m. Donations should be left at the school playground double gates. However please do not include any items of school uniform in this as we are making a separate collection of second hand uniform to send to a school in Uganda with which we are developing links. Items of uniform, including sweatshirts etc. with the school logo on, should be sent separately with your child for storing in school prior to being transported later in the year.

On this note we will be requesting that any Y6 uniform no longer needed be donated for this collection. We will arrange for this to be dropped off in school after the end of term.

School Council Meetings/ Disco: During this year the School Council have been discussing ways of spending a a sum of money allocated to them. They have decided that they would like to have a ‘free disco’ and so this has been arranged for Friday 17th June from 6.00p.m. to 8.00p.m. There will be no admission fee to this and every child will be given one free drink and a packet of crisps. Additional refreshments will be available for purchase.

Please note that children must be collected from this event by a responsible adult.

House Team Reward: As you know we have a House Point System in which children win points for their team as well as for themselves, contributing to their Merit achievement. The winning team’s reward will be a film evening after school. The children will be given a ‘hot dog’, a drink and popcorn in true cinema style. It is impossible to tell you at this point which team will be invited to this, but please note the date as your child might be in the winning team. – Thursday 14th July 4.30 – 6.00p.m.

Sports Day: We hope that the weather will be fine on Tuesday 12th July 1.15p.m. The children are already preparing for this event with high jump, long jump, running heats and practicing for the fun races. We do hope that you will be able to join us for the afternoon. A programme of events will be available prior to the day at a cost of 30p.

Finally, as usual, I would like to assure you that we are available to you at any time and if the member of staff you wish to see is not available, an appointment will always be made for you at a mutually convenient time.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you all enjoyed a pleasant Easter break. We are looking forward to our final term of the year and as always the Summer Term is going to be really busy. The term gets off to a gradual start with the Royal Wedding and May Bank holiday seeming to extend the Easter holiday. We hope you enjoy both of these days with your children. However, although the first half term is short, it is important as school tests will be undertaken across the school during this time.

A Diary of Events is attached to this letter for your information and planning.

Easter Draw: Thank you for your support, of the Easter Raffle. A total of £180.93 was raised for the Millennium Fund, which is used to provide additional resources for the school. A fantastic effort and our thanks, to Mrs Gray who, organises this each year.

School Information Booklet: Each year this is updated and distributed to our New Intake Parents. The 2011 edition will shortly be ready and a copy posted on our Website. Please do have a look at it as some information has changed. A hard copy can be obtained at the school office.

Recycle fabric / clothing for the Firefighters Charity: Collection on Friday 10th June 9.30a.m. Donations should be brought on that morning and left at the school playground double gates.

Y6 SATs: This week of national testing commences on Monday 9th May. The stated dates for each test are the only times that tests can be taken, so please make attendance this week a priority.

Y6 Sheringham Trip: This will take place from Sunday 22nd May with the first group returning on the Wednesday when the second group go. Second group returns on Saturday 28th May.

Think U Know.co.uk : We would remind you of this website, which informs and advises both children and parents, regarding internet safety. Leaflets are available from school and have previously been circulated.

We are aware that several of our children are active on the internet, and despite being underage, are involved with such sites as ‘facebook’. Parents need to be aware of the safety advice offered and be mindful of their responsibility for overseeing their children’s activities on the internet. This is not primarily school business and school cannot get involved in issues resulting from children’s involvement on such sites.

Headteacher Consultation Meetings: I have not given dates for these meetings this term, as no one has yet attended. However, if any parent wishes to see me on any issue, and can’t get into school at normal times, just contact us and we will arrange an appointment. I hope that all parents are aware that we are usually able to deal with queries or concerns straightaway during school times. Visitors are always welcome.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parents Carers,

I hope you enjoyed the Half Term Break. Please refer to my previous letter for the terms diary dates.

We are in the process of revising our Personal Targets and Behaviour and Effort Booklets so you will have noticed that these have not been sent home for a while. However we are aware that parents do like to have frequent reports on their child’s attitude and behaviour in school. Therefore we are sending an interim ‘Mini Report’ covering these aspects of your child’s performance during the last half term.

We hope to develop a booklet for the duration of a child’s time in the school, i.e. 6 mini reports, but we want to get the format right so this term you will be sent a form as a trial run to see if parents and teachers find the dialogue useful.

I hope that you will find it useful and will return it with your comments on your child’s report. Of course this will not replace the present end of year report or the parent’s evenings which will continue to be more in depth reporting systems. Also contact with parents will be made about underachievement or unacceptable behaviour at any time if we have concerns.

We are also considering ways of setting pupils targets, or their focus for their next steps in learning. We want this to involve the children and also yourselves so that you can share in supporting and encouraging your child’s learning. We really feel that Parent’s Evenings are probably the best way of sharing this information but we are looking at using the Learning Platform as a further way of communication. Please be patient with us as we want what we put into place to be useful and effective.

Any comments or suggestions about this would be appreciated and I will be holding a meeting for any parents who are interested in discussing this on Wednesday 9th March at 5.00p.m. during the Headteacher’s Consultation Evening. If you feel that you have something to offer, suggestions to make, or observations on the ‘Mini Report,’ please come and support the school as it tries to move forward on this.

Book Fair – We had a Book Fair planned for the Parents Evenings which had to be cancelled before Christmas. This has been rearranged and will now take place from Thursday 24th March to Wednesday 30th March. On each of these date the books will be available for sale in the school hall at 3.30p.m., and on 29th/30th during the Y6 Parents Evening. Everyone welcome.

Brigg Music Festival / Scunthorpe Music Festivals - We now have dates and times for the participation of our Recorder Players in the Brigg Festival. They are now included on the attached diary. All events will take place at St John’s Church, Brigg. I will be contacting parents involved to arrange transport sharing arrangements.

Also, the Scunthorpe Festival applications will need to be in shortly so I will also be sending further information to those parents concerned.

Jack Marshall Brain Tumour Fund – I have had a letter from the parents of Jack, for whom we raised money at our Christmas concert, thanking the school and the parents who donated. I am passing on this message.

Yours faithfully,

Gillian Vernau

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we approach our Half Term break it seems a good time to bring you up to date with what has been happening in school. An updated diary is attached for the second part of the term.

We have already enjoyed some interesting events this term with our Pantomime performance of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and last week our celebration of Chinese New Year. This was a fantastic day, enjoyed by all. Thank you for your support in providing clothing, artefacts and in some cases helping with research into the subject at home.

Y3/4 Mathematics for Parents Meetings – These have proved to be very useful for some of our parents and though the final evening meeting was poorly attended it was good to share concerns and address misunderstandings. Some documents to help parents with Mathematics at home will shortly be put on our website for you to use.

Non Uniform Days – Charity Fund Raising - You will notice that we have two non uniform days on successive Fridays during the remainder of this term, and a charity donation is requested for each. I am sorry that they are so close together but as national based fund raising, the dates were not ours to change. Red Nose Day is a worldwide celebration that we clearly want to share in and giving through school is an easy way of making a donation.

The Focus on the Crocus is an initiative by the Rotary Clubs across the country and they are trying to raise money to eradicate ‘Polio’ in the world. During the Autumn Term a member of the organisation came to speak to all the pupils in assembly and gave us 100 Crocuses to plant near the school entrance. I hope that shortly these will grow to remind us of this important event and to welcome Spring.

I hope that you will feel able to give to both events.

Additional Bank Holiday for the Royal Wedding - We will of course be closed on Friday 29th April for the Royal Wedding and with the May Day Bank Holiday falling on the following Monday 2nd May, this will make a long weekend break very near the start of the Summer Term. School will of course be open on 27th and 28th of April.

Y6 SATs and School Testing – These will take place in the week beginning 9th May and we would ask that absence is avoided during this time. The rest of the school will also be doing their annual tests in Literacy and Mathematics at about this time.

School Car Park – I am sorry to have to say that despite regular requests parents are still using the school car park at the beginning and end of the day to drop off and collect pupils. Please be reminded that the school Car Park is not for the use of parents, except for disabled drivers by prior arrangement with the school.

We are now having to consider putting costly automatic gates on the entrance to this potentially dangerous area. We don’t want to have to do this but if our requests continue to be ignored we will have no alternative. Please co-operate with us on this as we really have better things to spend school monies on.

Finally to remind you that we will, if possible, see parents at any time, although for class teachers, the start of the day is not an easy time for prolonged meetings. If, on rare occasions, we cannot be available, then an appointment will be made for you at the earliest mutually convenient time.

Yours sincerely,

Gillian Vernau

Dear Parents/Carers,

A Happy New Year to you all. I hope your Christmas was happy and restful.

We had a great time with our Christmas festivities despite the weather. The concerts provided great entertainment and the children really enjoyed their parties. Thank you for your involvement and generosity. The Christmas raffle raised £658.94 for the School Fund, and the collection at the concerts raised £391.27 which will be shared between the charities; ‘Dylan’s Dream’ and the ‘Jack Marshall’s Brain Tumour Fund.’

As usual we have a diary of events for the Spring Term attached to this letter. I hope that this will help you to plan in advance, your involvement with school activities.

Parents Evenings - Because of the weather, we had to cancel Parents Evening at the end of the Autumn Term we are rescheduling this on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th January.

Our Year 6 teachers will be holding a further Parents Consultation on 28th and 29th March in order to give support to pupils and parents prior to the SATs tests which will take place in May.

The rest of the school will have a further Parents Evening in the Summer Term.

Theatre Visits – This term we have booked a Pantomime performance of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ from ‘M and M Theatrical Productions’. We hope that you will consent to making a voluntary contribution of £2.00 to cover the cost of this. Please complete the slip at the end of the letter to make your contribution.

School Activities – This year we are taking part in both the Scunthorpe and the Brigg Music Festival. In addition the school choir will be taking part in the Primary Music Celebration. More information to follow but please note the dates on the diary.

Y3/4 Mathematics for Parents Meetings - These have proved to be very useful for some of our parents and as requested the final meeting is during the early evening to enable parents who cannot attend day time sessions, to take part. This will be at 5.30p.m. on Monday 24th January.

Polite Reminders – Please be reminded that the school Car Park is not for the use of parents, especially at the start and end of the school day.

Also please be mindful that dinner money loans are for emergencies only and must be paid back the following day.

Thank you for your co-operation with these matters.

Finally to remind you that we will, if possible, see parents at any time, although for class teachers, the start of the day is not an easy time for prolonged meetings. If, on rare occasions, we cannot be available, then an appointment will be made for you at the earliest mutually convenient time.
